Day 3: Montecatini Terme - Siena Tour
After breakfast, transfer to Siena for your full-day tour. Set in the most beautiful Tuscan countryside of rolling hills, lush vines, and gray-green olive trees. Siena offers much to see, from fine palaces that line the narrow-cobbled streets to the superb Duomo. The iconic Duomo is the most impressive Gothic cathedral in Italy. The exterior is built with white and green stripes, while the interior is home to some of the most remarkable works of Italian Renaissance art. Later you see the Piazza del Campo, the hub of Sienna and one of the most famous public squares in the world. Its unique shell-like shape sets it apart from other squares and is the site of the twice-a-year Palio di Siena, a horse race that has been held here since the Middle Ages. After the tour, take time to explore the sights of Siena independently and possibly visit the charming shops of the Via dei Banchi di Sopra. Today, along the way, you will visit the American Military Cemetery and Memorial. See the burial area where 4,392 headstones are curved in symmetrical rows upon the hillside. They represent 39% of the U.S. Fifth Army burials originally made between Rome and the Alps. Most died in the fighting after Rome's capture in June 1944. Among them are casualties of the heavy fighting in the Apennines Mountains shortly before the war's end.
